What began as a simple solo project in the summer of 2008 has, over time and travel, evolved into a powerful and dynamic folk-pop experience. Lauren Mann brings eclectic, passionate, and, as the name might give away, a fairly odd group of  musicians alongside her to bring greater instrumentation and dynamic to her captivating songs.

The band brings together a cast of 6 (and sometimes more…) members to create their own unique wall-of-sound. Songs that began as sparse, dust-covered arrangements have developed into full-fledged, lush indie-folk anthems filled with strings, horns and layers of feedback drenched guitars and sweet vocal harmonies.

The Foggy Notions – an outfit put together from the pop possibilities from the Flying Nun Records catalog, and the sonic aspects of the Creation Records catalog, have a sound that’s anything but prefab. The band released their debut album, Beginning to See, in May of 2011 to positive reviews from fans and critics alike and have just started work on their second album with Woodie Taylor (Morrissey/Comet Gain).

His production, engineering and mixing skills, as well as vocal & instrumental licks, have graced a huge amount of Roots music releases by such acts as Lucinda Williams, Mary Gauthier, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Slaid Cleaves, Bettysoo and Robyn Ludwick as well as Canadian acts Romi Mayes, Scott Nolan and others. This time around Gurf is flying solo, treating audiences to a full evening of songs old and new, as well as some Blaze songs… and there are also some great (often tall) stories along the way.

Dean McNeill is an excellent jazz trumpet player with formidable skills as an improviser, arranger, and composer.  Dave Nelson is a true jazzer and has three CDs as leader, two of which were recorded in the Big Apple.   For over 30 years Barrie Redford’s astounding range and creative solos have delighted audiences throughout western Canada.   Backup provided by Doug Gilmour – bass, Brett Balon – piano, and D’arce McMillan – drums.
