The Saskatchewan Jazz Festival On Tour and the Bassment present saxophonist and TD Jazz Intensive coordinator Mark DeJong and his quartet, featuring Jon McCaslin (drums), Dean McNeill (trumpet), and TD Jazz Intensive instructors Soren Nissen (bass) and Carsten Rubeling (trombone).

Together they will present an evening devoted to the jazz art form including performance, demonstrations, question period, and an all-ages jam session.

GC Combining jazz and pop, The Worst Pop Band Ever has influences from Wayne Shorter to Deerhoof to J Dilla.  Whether blending acoustic bass with turntables or analog synths with the saxophone, the band twists and bends both original and cover tunes.  Edmonton’s ultra-precocious funk-jazz duo Luke & Tess Pretty open the night.  $15/20 

Local sax legend Bob Klassen and recently returned native-son pianist Kim Salkeld are joined  by  singer Grant Currie for a night of swinging jazz favorites.  The KS Quintet also features Bruce Wilkinson on bass and D’Arce McMillan on drums.    The opening set will be played by The Lost Keys with Wendy Thomson-vocals, Mike Sheridan-guitar, and Lorne Deighton-bass.

Anderson and Darrell Burko have become a Saskatoon musical favourite. The band is known for engaging and entertaining live shows which feature Roy and Darrell sharing songs, stories, and a stage full of instruments.

Blessed with a truly angelic voice, Ana Egge also has a couple of sets of great original tunes and a sweet acoustic guitar that she made in high school.   Ana’s a capella performance of Edelweiss as the encore of her performance this past November has become a legendary Bassment memory.                                         Saskatoon’s Little Criminals (Amanda Bestvater and Taylor Read) play the opening set.

Jazz songstress Tatrina Tai takes the Bassment stage to perform with the talented and entertaining Maurice Drouin and his Orchestra.

Meeting In Progress is a jazz combo created by the collective visions of its six members, who spend their time arranging standards to suit their needs.  They take “Jazz Studies” as a class together at Walter Murray Collegiate in Saskatoon and have been together for two years.  The members of this group are: Connor Denomy – tenor sax, Colin Grant – trumpet, Chris Waddell – alto sax, Rowan MacLachlan – guitar, Paul Oh – drums, and Jarrod Pas – bass.

John Harmon is an active, free-lance composer of orchestral,wind ensemble, chamber, choral, and jazz music. He also maintains a busy performance and recording schedule as well as a roster of private students in his studio. He has taught evolution of jazz, composition, arranging, music appreciation and improvisation at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and at Lawrence University, Appleton, WI. A native of Oshkosh and a graduate of Lawrence University, was a private student of world-renowned jazz pianist, Oscar Peterson. Harmon formed the group Matrix in the 1970′s and performed with them until 1981.  He has earned prestigious recognition: the Jazziz award (1998),the Renaissance Award (Lawrence University, 1999), the Distinguished Service Award from WSMA (Wisconsin State Music Association) and Wisconsin Artist Fellowship (both 2001), an honorary doctorate degree from Lawrence University and the Wisconsin Academy of Science, Arts, and Letters Fellowship (both 2005), and in 2006, the Distinguished Service Award from IAJE  (International Association of Jazz Educators). John has more than 100 composing commissions for a variety of ensembles ranging from solo instrument to full orchestra with concert choir.

John is joined by Greg Gatien – tenor sax, Eric Platz – drums, and John Baron – drums.

With a twenty five year history of playing at The Bassment, our very own Bassment Big Band takes the stage for its yearly pre-Jazz Fest performance.    Under the direction of Doug Gilmour, The Saskatoon Community Jazz Band is back for a return performance.
