passionate jazz lover, vocal stylist Shelly Loeffler
teams with pianist Ray LaBlanc, drummer Bill
Watson and bassist Skip Kutz to recreate
the 1950s beat boom. Drawing her material from legendary beat
poets Jack Kerouac, Alan Ginsberg and others Shelly mesmerizes
audiences with her sensual and haunting performances of classic
beat poetry. In addition to exploring the Beats from the 1950s,
Shelly brings her own original compositions to the stage. If
you’re looking to listen to a new spin on classic sounds
this is the show for you. |

Leanne Hynd - CD Release

Denise
Leanne Hynd is a Saskatoon based singer/songwriter
who just completed her recording, Stand On the Edge. The Bassment
hosts a CD release to commemorate the completion of the 14
song recording project. Featuring Hynd’s compositions,
the group includes a stellar cast of Saskatoon musicians:
Glen Adair, Jim Boswell, Roy Sydiaha, Doug Scarrow, Terry
Collison and Gillian Snider. Admission is free and
copies of the disc are available for sale. Two dollars
from each disc sale will be donated to the BridgePoint Centre
for Eating Disorders.

The
Dave Nelson Quintet |

One of
the city’s most dedicated and talented jazz musicians
brings his quintet to the Bassment for an evening of standards,
Latin and vocal jazz. Dave, a stalwart of the Tuesday night
jams, plays trumpet and flugelhorn and contributes vocals.
He’ll be joined by Saskatoon Idol runner-up Vanessa
Nelson on vocals; Matt Siebert on
piano; from Regina, Peter Dyksman on bass;
local legend Bill Watson on drums; and from
Toronto, Adam Gillespie on soprano, alto
and tenor saxophones. Special guest artist will be gold-medal-winning
vocalist Mary Joy Nelson.
Sounds like the perfect mix of seasoned veterans and rising
stars and another great evening of jazz at the Bassment.

Colin
Linden ($20) |
The
Saskatoon Blues Society presents a special evening with internationally
acclaimed guitarist, singer/songwriter, producer Colin Linden.
Linden has played on more than 150 albums and counts amongst
producer credits Bruce Cockburn, Colin James, Leon Redbone,
T-Bone Burnett and The Band. Currently residing in Nashville,
Linden contributed to the multi-million selling soundtrack,
O Brother Where Art Thou? He is a founding member of the Juno
Award winning super group, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings.

Roy Sydiaha Quartet |

Roy Sydiaha
shares drum set, vibes and conga duties with Brett Balon at
this Bassment performance.The two percussionists are joined
by Warren Hay on bass and Stephen Scharfstein on piano, playing
standards and lots of latin tunes. Vocalist Gillian Snider
will drop in to lend her voice to some not-often-sung jazz
tunes, such as Joy Spring and Oleo. And is that The Girl From
Ipanema in 7/4?

SJS Big Band |
| The
Bassment is pleased to once again welcome our very own Saskatoon
Jazz Society (SJS) Big Band, an adult community group featuring
local Saskatoon players. They play a wide range of music,
from pieces popularized by big bands such as Duke Ellington,
Woody Herman, and Stan Kenton, to blues and latin styles,
including some vocals from a local singer/pianist Jamie Scharfstein.
The 14 piece band, headed by Larry Hume, includes: five saxes,
with Glenn Kitsch on bari, Jason Jordan & Janelle Orcherton
playing tenor,
and Kevin Baribeau & Albert La on alto; three trumpets
including Andrew Couperthwaite, Marissa Myers, and Paul Newton;
three trombones including Laurier Baribeau, Larry Hume, and
Chris Klassen; and Graham Walker on bass; Jamie Scharfstein
on piano/vocal; and D'Arce McMillan on drums.
It’s always a great night when the Bassment swings to
the big band sound. We’ll see you there!

Slide,Squeeze
and Strum |

The Saskatoon
Jazz Society is excited to present Slide, Squeeze and Strum
featuring slide guitarist Steve Dawson, guitarist Don Rooke
and accordion player Geoff Berner.
Vancouver based Dawson is an accomplished guitarist producer
and songwriter. He was a member of the Juno award winning
duo, Zubot and Dawson. Berner, also a fixture on the Vancouver
music scene mixes folk, punk and klezmer into a musical stew.
Rooke, a Toronto based guitarist, broke onto the national
music scene with his band, The Henrys. His main instrument
is the kona, a 1920s acoustic Hawaiian guitar. His new solo
disc, Atlas Travel was named one of the top discs of the year
by Georgia Straight magazine.
A Saskatoon acoustic duo will open the show.
