wednesday April 28th top Slide,Squeeze and Strum

The Saskatoon Jazz Society is excited to present Slide, Squeeze and Strum featuring slide guitarist Steve Dawson, guitarist Don Rooke and accordion player Geoff Berner.
Vancouver based Dawson is an accomplished guitarist producer and songwriter. He was a member of the Juno award winning duo, Zubot and Dawson. Berner, also a fixture on the Vancouver music scene mixes folk, punk and klezmer into a musical stew. Rooke, a Toronto based guitarist, broke onto the national music scene with his band, The Henrys. His main instrument is the kona, a 1920s acoustic Hawaiian guitar. His new solo disc, Atlas Travel was named one of the top discs of the year by Georgia Straight magazine.
A Saskatoon acoustic duo will open the show.

saturday April 30th top Five Star Homeless with Echolalia ($5)
Recognizing the popularity of down home music, as evidenced by our St Patrick’s Day Fiddle Fest, The SJS ventures again beyond our traditional borders with two highly recommended local configurations: Five Star Homeless and Echolalia
Quoting from their website Saskatoon’s Five Star Homeless is an aggressive “roots a’ billy” quintet known to make audiences bounce like laundry, jig like trout fisherman and stomp like ferocious homebrewers.
“Leaders in the fields of cousin kissin’ and trailer trashin’, Five Star Homeless marches alone over the skeletal remains of popular music. Home-grown original material and farm fresh antics will leave you, the listener, feeling delightfully steeped in the very prairie sunshine that parched the lips of plenty of pioneers.”
Opening the show are Adrian Chappell and Stephanie Cameron, known on stage as Echolalia. Accompanying themselves on classical violin and guitar, their influences and style runs from the venerable Joni Mitchell to the angst of Miss C. Love.
saturday May 1 top Mike Splindloe

Ex-Saskatonian Mike Spindloe, now living and playing in Vancouver, returns to The Bassment for his first Saskatoon gig since last May. For the last year, Mike has been engaged in the study of improvisation and has been playing with several groups in Vancouver, including a jazz trio,small-group swing music, a jazz orchestra and a Latin band. He'll be joined at The Bassment by Unity Ensemble stalwarts Clay Jarvis on guitar, Andy Clapson on drums and other guests. The evening will feature a number of classic "freejazzrockfusion" Unity Ensemble pieces as well as unique interpretations of some jazz standards which the group will be presenting for the first time. Expect a high-energy show with some surprises!

saturday May 8th top Johnny Summers Quartet ($12 & $15)
Genuine, passionate, innovative; that in a nutshell describes Calgary’s youngest and most rapidly accelerating jazz musician, Johnny Summers. Hailed as Calgary’s poster boy for jazz, the 25 year old trumpeter, flugelhornist, and vocalist is progressing at a relentless pace, having released his second album entitled Walk Through the Park in May of 2003. Summers holds a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies degree from the University of Calgary, where he graduated in 1999. Since then, he has continued to expand his musical horizons through performing, composing, and arranging.
With an outstanding quartet, Summers’ has taken his music and career to a new level. The four have a great chemistry and sense of humour about them, allowing them to connect with their audiences and deliver a phenomenal show in a live concert setting.
Summers’ is well known for his ability to make an audience laugh, cry, and dance all in one night, often presenting personal anecdotes, jokes, and surprises.
Summers has traveled from Vancouver to Hawaii, Los Angeles to New Orleans, Britain to Spain and has played with many outstanding musicians. At this pace, keeping up with Summers’ may prove to be a challenge; he has a growing and loyal audience and his dynamic trumpet style and intense lyrical approach give every song great energy. Summers' repertoire spans the jazz idiom from early Traditional Jazz to Be-Bop, Modern to New Orleans Funk, to Second Line Music and a whole lot more.
