March 12 – Don Watson Memorial Octet (Saskatoon)
The late Don Watson was one of the city’s finest musicians,
and fortunately he left us a lasting legacy of an outstanding
library of arrangements for jazz octet. This group carries on
his tradition with an evening of classic music, served up by
some of our best local players. The mini-big-band sound is outstanding,
presenting both Don’s originals and timeless standards
with an approach that leaves no doubt that this music will be
around for a long long time. The personnel includes some of
the city’s finest: Leader Bob Klassen on tenor saxophone
is joined by Graeme Steen on alto saxophone, Barrie Redford
on trombone, Paul Newton on trumpet, Doug Gilmour on bass, Sheldon
Corbett on piano and Darce McMillan on drums, with vocals by
Grant Currie. The evening will feature a special presentation
of Don’s salute to jazz musicians which was commissioned
by the SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival. This rarely performed
piece pays tribute to the greats of jazz from Louis Armstrong
to Miles Davis.
