Jazz Band 1-Director: Dean McNeill
Dean McNeill has taught at the University of Saskatchewan since
the fall of 1998 where his duties include the supervision of
the jazz and brass components of the music program. He has performed
in jazz combos with the likes of pianist/composer Dr. Tommy
Banks, O.C., Dan Hearle, and with saxophonists Campbell Ryga
and P.J. Perry.
There are
now two jazz ensembles which complement the many other performing
ensembles at the UofS. This year we are pleased to have Mark
DeJong join the UofS sessional faculty as director of the UofS
Jazz Ensemble II, and instructor of Jazz History, Jazz Improvisation,
and our Jazz Ensemble Techniques courses. The Jazz Ensembles
are but a few of the many performance opportunities at the University
of Saskatchewan for music majors and non-music majors alike.

Jack is well-known and loved by Saskatoon audiences, and one
of those rare guitar players who leaves a crowd astonished and
speechless. Listening to and watching Jack play fills one with
a sense of having witnessed an event in time, one not soon to
be forgotten. Jack Semple is a guitar player’s guitar
player. An absolute virtuoso of his art form, Jack plays with
unparalleled feeling and total technical control.
And don't forget Jack can sing. He has a set of pipes that can
be smooth as silk or raw and jagged. His vocal talents alone
are an event to behold. Don't miss guitar playing at its finest;
a little acoustic and a little electric.

Read, George Tennent, Glenn Ens and special guests. Saskatoon's
veteran bluesman puts a blues spin on seasonal classics. Doors

December 18 - Chunk of Funk (Saskatoon)
Chunk of Funk is dedicated to preserving the funky sounds of
the organ trios and quartets of Jimmy Smith and Jimmy McGriff.
If you were lucky enough to see the band open
for Joshua Redman at the Jazz Festival in 2003, you'll recall
that Chunk of Funk plays music that is exciting and accessible.
In addition to Griffith's original tunes such as "Dyslexic
Blues" and "Broadway Bill", the band plays all
the organ classics including Smith's "Chicken Shack"
and "The Cat". Griffith is joined on stage by some
of the province’s best jazz musicians. Sheldon Corbett,
who has played with everybody in Saskatchewan, plays tenor sax.
Bill Watson, the new "Mayor of Broadway" lays down
the swinging, funky, and dynamic groove he is famous for.

January 8 - Don Griffith and Nathan Renner (Saskatoon/Toronto)
Two of the city’s finest and best-known jazz musicians,
Nathan Renner and Don Griffith are featured in the intimate
evening of piano and guitar. Nathan is currently studying jazz
at Humber College in Toronto, and will join forces with Don,
who remains active in the local music scene. Nathan and Don
began playing together at the Bassment’s Tuesday night
jam sessions when Nathan was still in elementary school. Their
musical friendship has grown over the years, culminating in
a CD entitled “The Bridge Between Us”. The CD features
seven original tunes as well as the standards “Spring
is Here” and “Some Other Time”.

Don Berner, is based out of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. A young
Alto Saxophone player and noted doubler, Don has performed alongside
many renowned Canadian and International Jazz musicians. Don
Berner group includes...Joel Gray, Craig Brenan, Rubin Detoledo,
Charlie Austin and Ron Samson.
