Sunday,April 10th - NOJO (Toronto)
NOJO’s many influences include African music, early blues, contemporary classical music, funk and r&b, and a century of jazz. Featuring the compositions of pianist Paul Neufeld and guitarist Michael Occhipinti, the group’s recordings reveal a distinct and cohesive sound. The Los Angeles Times has called NOJO “one of the most imaginative large ensembles on the current jazz scene” and it is no surprise that the band’s music has intrigued guest soloists such as saxophone great Joe Lovano, trombonist Ray Anderson, trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, and most notably clarinetist Don Byron and saxophone giant Sam Rivers. Covering a broad stylistic range with an energy that few ensembles can match, NOJO performs with a friendly spirit and a high level of musicianship
that puts it on par with the best large ensembles anywhere.Their CD City of Neighbourhoods with Sam Rivers has received a 2005 JUNO Award nomination for Best Contemporary Jazz Album.

Hammett-Vaughan's highly personal and expressive vocal style incorporates the breadth of her musical interests, from straight-ahead soulful ballads to hard-swinging grooves and improvisational adventures. Her approach is fresh and invigorating, paying tribute to the jazz tradition while interacting and exploring, always seeking to express herself in the moment. Her fantastic quintet (which includes bassist Andr Lachance, pianist Chris Gestrin, saxophonist Jim Pinchin, and drummer Tom Foster) is the perfect setting for Kate's vocals, seamlessly moving from groove to groove and taking risks while challenging and supporting her at every turn.
